Overview

Motor drives are the backbone of industrial automation and of countless appliances, and they share a common problem: every capacitor in the motor system has to last as long as the equipment. A variable-speed drive converts a DC bus into three-phase AC at a switching frequency high enough for smooth torque, and the DC link that supports that bus is where the electrolytic capacitor used to fail first. At the same time, a single-phase motor needs a run capacitor that stays in circuit for the whole operating life and holds its capacitance over temperature and time. Faratronic film capacitors address both, giving the drive a long-life DC link and the motor a stable, safe run capacitor.

The Drive DC Link and Snubber

In a variable-speed drive the DC-link capacitor supplies the switch current at each commutation and holds the bus steady during a load step. A film capacitor such as the C3D carries the high-frequency ripple current with low ESR and does not dry out, so the DC link no longer limits the life of the drive. Across each module, a C38 or C3H snubber clamps the turn-off spike that the commutation-loop inductance produces, and its low equivalent series inductance is what makes it effective at the switching speed of a modern drive. Mounting the snubber at the module terminals keeps the loop small.

Ripple Current and Thermal Design

The decisive check for the DC link is ripple current, not capacitance. The RMS current at the switching frequency sets the capacitor hot-spot temperature, and the value must be chosen so that temperature stays within rating at the worst-case ambient. This is where a film capacitor wins over an electrolytic, because its low ESR converts far less of that current into heat.

Motor Run Capacitors

A single-phase motor uses a run capacitor to set the phase shift that produces the rotating field. The value is critical: too little capacitance reduces starting torque and running flux, while too much raises the winding current and temperature, and both shorten motor life. The C61 box capacitor suits fans, pumps and small motors where space is tight, and the C65 aluminum cylinder with an explosion-proof case suits compressors and larger motors that carry more current and need a part that fails safe. Both are built to IEC 60252-1 and hold their capacitance over life.

Validation with BeiLuo

The BeiLuo FAE team helps size the DC link, select the snubber and match the motor capacitor. Send the bus voltage, the motor rating and the mains voltage for a matched recommendation with stock and lead time.

Working With BeiLuo

Because Faratronic covers the DC link, the snubber and the motor run capacitor from one authorized channel, a customer can consolidate the whole capacitive bill of materials, which simplifies the quality agreement, the import documentation and the audit trail. Our FAE team reviews the ripple current, the snubber loop and the motor match, then quotes with current stock and lead time.
