Overview
Renewable energy has become the cheapest source of new electricity in many markets, and its growth depends on power electronics that convert variable solar and wind energy into stable, grid-compliant power. Solar string inverters, wind full-converters and battery storage systems all share a common need: a DC link that holds the bus voltage steady, carries a high ripple current and survives years outdoors at high ambient temperature. That is a demanding combination for an electrolytic capacitor, whose electrolyte dries out and whose ESR limits the ripple current it can carry, and it is the reason film capacitors have become the preferred DC-link part in renewable converters.
The DC Link in a Solar Inverter
A string solar inverter begins with a DC-DC boost stage that implements maximum power point tracking, followed by a DC-AC inverter stage that feeds the grid. Both stages draw high-frequency ripple current from the DC link, and the capacitor must supply that current and hold the bus steady during the fast changes of irradiance and cloud movement. Faratronic film capacitors such as the C3D carry that ripple with low ESR, and their self-healing construction clears a local breakdown instead of failing short, which matters in an installation that must run for decades.
High Bus Voltage and 3-Level Topologies
Modern string inverters use a high DC bus, so the capacitor voltage class must cover the bus plus the switching overshoot with margin; the C3B aluminum-case series extends the range to 1500 Vdc. Larger converters use 3-level NPC and ANPC topologies to reduce switching loss, and these need a snubber across each module. The C3H PCB snubber and the C38 lug-terminal snubber clamp the turn-off spike and damp the ringing at each device, which is essential when several modules switch in series.
Battery Storage and Wind
A battery storage converter is bidirectional, so its DC link carries ripple in both charge and discharge modes; the aluminum-case C3B with screw terminals is well suited to the higher currents involved. Wind full-converters work at high power and high bus voltage, where the low self-inductance of a film capacitor and a screw-terminal busbar connection keep the bus voltage clean. In every case, the film capacitor outlasts the electrolytic it replaces and removes the dry-out failure mode.
