The C3B from Faratronic is a dry-type DC-Link film capacitor in an aluminum case with screw terminals, designed for the higher-current DC bus where an electrolytic bank would otherwise be used. It is built from metallized polypropylene film with a low equivalent series resistance, a low self-inductance and self-healing behaviour, and its aluminum case with resin encapsulation gives a rugged part that mounts on a power stack and conducts heat to the chassis. The series covers about 110 uF to 3400 uF at 600 Vdc to 1500 Vdc, with a tolerance of plus or minus 5 or 10 percent, so it suits motor drives, wind and photovoltaic converters, UPS systems and high-power industrial supplies. Because the film capacitor has no electrolyte, it does not dry out and does not suffer the end-of-life capacitance loss of an electrolytic, which raises the working life of the whole converter and reduces maintenance. The screw terminals make a low-inductance connection to laminated busbars, which is what the DC link of a high-power converter needs to keep the switching loop small.
