C38

The C38 from Faratronic is the lug-terminal version of the IGBT snubber capacitor, designed for a power stack where the capacitor bolts directly across the module busbars. It shares the electrical design of the C3H series, with metallized polypropylene film, a low equivalent series inductance and a resin-filled, self-healing construction that clamps a turn-off spike safely and has excellent flame-retardant behaviour. The series covers about 0.047 uF to 9.0 uF at 630 Vdc to 3000 Vdc, with a tolerance of plus or minus 5 or 10 percent, over minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius, so it suits traction and rail converters, large motor drives, induction heating and high-voltage supplies. The lug terminals are the reason to choose the C38 over the C3H: a bolted connection to the module makes the snubber loop as short as the construction allows, which is what keeps the overshoot low in a high-current converter. Because the snubber is the last line of defence for an expensive module, its reliability matters as much as its value, and the self-healing film clears a local breakdown instead of failing short.
