Faratronic IGBT Snubber Capacitors Overview

BeiLuo supplies genuine Faratronic snubber capacitors, the film capacitors that protect a power switch from the voltage spike and ringing produced by stray inductance when it turns off. In an IGBT or SiC converter, the commutation loop stores energy every switching cycle, and without a snubber that energy appears as an overvoltage at the device terminals that can exceed the blocking rating and destroy the switch. A snubber capacitor placed directly across the device clamps the spike, damps the ringing and reduces electromagnetic interference, and its low equivalent series inductance is what makes it effective at high dv/dt. Faratronic builds these capacitors from metallized polypropylene film with a resin-filled, self-healing construction and excellent flame-retardant behaviour, so a transient is absorbed safely rather than causing a failure, and the parts are rated from minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius. The C3H series is a PCB-mount snubber for IGBT modules, covering roughly 0.047 uF to 9.0 uF at 630 Vdc to 3000 Vdc, and the C38 series is the same electrical design with lug terminals for higher-power stacks. For higher pulse currents, the C3G dry-type series extends the range to about 600 uF at up to 850 Vac for dV/dt filters and high-current pulse duty, while the C16 axial series suits point-of-use snubbing. These parts are used in traction converters, motor drives, induction heating, welding and high-voltage supplies. BeiLuo holds fast-moving snubber values in stock and our FAE team helps select the capacitance, the voltage class and the current-limiting inductor for your commutation loop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does an IGBT need a snubber capacitor?

When the switch turns off, the energy stored in the commutation-loop inductance appears as a voltage spike at the collector. A snubber capacitor across the device absorbs that energy and clamps the spike, keeping it below the blocking rating and damping the ringing that radiates EMI.

Measure the spike at the module terminals, not the bus.

How do I choose the snubber capacitance?

Start from the loop inductance and the peak current to estimate the energy to absorb, then pick a capacitance that clamps the spike within a safe margin without adding excessive switching loss. The voltage class should exceed the worst-case spike with margin.

Our FAE team can run the energy and clamp calculation.

PCB snubber or lug-terminal snubber?

Choose the C3H PCB version when the capacitor mounts on the driver or power board close to the module. Choose the C38 lug-terminal version for a power stack where the capacitor bolts directly across the module busbars for the lowest loop inductance.

Shorter connections always mean less overshoot.

What is the role of the current-limiting inductor?

In a polarised snubber the inductor is not always used; in an RC snubber across the diode the resistor sets the discharge and the resistor dissipates the stored energy. In a complete snubber design the capacitance, resistance and loop layout work together, so the value must be chosen for the whole circuit.
