Faratronic DC-Link Capacitors Overview

BeiLuo supplies genuine Faratronic DC-Link film capacitors, the component that stabilises and filters the DC bus in an inverter, a photovoltaic converter or an industrial power supply. A DC-Link capacitor must absorb the ripple current produced by high-frequency switching, hold the bus voltage steady during a load step and survive a high ambient temperature for many years. Faratronic metallized polypropylene film capacitors are built for exactly this duty: low equivalent series resistance, low self-inductance, high ripple-current capability and self-healing behaviour that clears a local breakdown instead of failing the whole part. The C3D series is a PCB-mount DC-Link capacitor with a plastic case that is UL94 V-0 rated and resin filled, covering roughly 1 uF to 180 uF at 500 Vdc to 1200 Vdc, in a standard footprint with pitches from 27.5 mm to 52.5 mm. The C3B series is a dry-type aluminum-case capacitor with screw terminals that replaces a bank of electrolytics in higher-power converters, covering about 110 uF to 3400 uF at 600 Vdc to 1500 Vdc. Both series are used in motor drives, photovoltaic and wind inverters, on-board chargers, UPS systems and high-end industrial supplies. Compared with an electrolytic of the same rating, a film capacitor has lower ESR, a much longer life and no dry-out mechanism, which is why designers move the DC link from electrolytic to film. BeiLuo holds mainstream ratings in stock and ships with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents; our FAE team helps size the bus capacitance, the ripple current and the thermal design for the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a film DC-Link capacitor instead of an electrolytic?

A metallized polypropylene film capacitor has much lower ESR, tolerates a far higher ripple current and does not dry out, so its life is measured in decades rather than a few thousand hours. It also self-heals a local breakdown instead of failing short.

In a high-frequency inverter the film type often outlasts the product it is fitted to.

How do I size the DC-Link capacitance?

Start from the allowable bus-voltage ripple at the switching frequency, then confirm the capacitor can carry the resulting RMS ripple current at the hot case temperature. Energy storage for a load step is a secondary check.

Ripple current, not capacitance, usually sets the final choice.

What is the difference between C3D and C3B?

The C3D is a PCB-mount capacitor with a plastic case and pin terminals for lower-power and mid-power boards. The C3B is a dry-type aluminum-case capacitor with screw terminals for higher current, where it replaces a bank of electrolytics.

Choose C3D for a compact board and C3B for a power stack.

Can BeiLuo help with ripple-current and thermal design?

Yes. Send your bus voltage, ripple-current spectrum, ambient temperature and available space, and our FAE team will propose a value and case style with the expected hot-spot temperature.

That check avoids a DC link that runs too hot in the field.
