The C3D from Faratronic is a PCB-mount DC-Link film capacitor built for the DC bus of an inverter, a photovoltaic converter, an on-board charger or a high-end industrial power supply. It uses metallized polypropylene film in a plastic case rated UL94 V-0 and resin filled, and its low equivalent series resistance and low self-inductance let it carry the high-frequency ripple current that a switching power stage produces without overheating. The series covers roughly 1 uF to 180 uF at 500 Vdc to 1200 Vdc, with a standard footprint and terminal pitches from 27.5 mm to 52.5 mm, so a designer can select the capacitance and the bus voltage for the application. The film construction self-heals: a local breakdown clears itself instead of shorting the whole capacitor, which is one reason film DC-Link capacitors outlast the electrolytics they replace, with no dry-out mechanism and a very long life. Typical values used in the market include the C3D1U106 at 600 Vdc and 10 uF, and the C3D2K107 at 800 Vdc and 100 uF. Why does low ESL matter in a DC-Link capacitor?
At high switching frequency the capacitor must supply the switch current with the smallest possible loop, so a low self-inductance keeps the bus voltage stable and reduces the spike the module sees.
